Our Farm
We're not just another mealworm importer repackaging product from China. We're a small family farm raising mealworms on agricultural waste — wheat bran, old bread from the food pantry, and locally grown potatoes. We process and package everything we sell in our own facility.

Nutrition & Alternative Protein

Dried mealworms are high in protein and essential fatty acids, non-GMO, 100% all natural, and a perfect supplement to your birds' regular diet. Recent studies show healthier and more productive poultry when insects make up 5–10% of their diet. Consider replacing up to 10% of your regular chicken feed with dried mealworms to reduce reliance on soy and fish meal protein.

What They're Good For

Wild Birds

Attract Over 30 Species to Your Yard

Entice chickadees, nuthatches, jays, woodpeckers, robins, bluebirds, and more. Mealworms are an irresistible, high-energy food especially crucial during nesting season — providing parent birds the fuel they need to raise healthy chicks. For a complete species list for your area, try the Cornell Lab's Project Feeder Watch or the Avian Report's state-specific guides.

Backyard Chickens & Poultry

A Healthy, Engaging Treat for Your Flock

Mealworms encourage natural foraging behavior and are an incredible supplement for flock health. They reduce boredom in the coop, strengthen your bond with your birds, and turn treat time into a frenzy of excitement. Works equally well for ducks, quail, and other poultry.

Molting Season

Extra Protein When They Need It Most

During molting — whether Autumn or Spring — chickens require extra protein to nourish feather growth and boost their immune systems. With approximately 8,500 feathers comprising about 85% protein, your birds need top-quality nutrition to support this demanding process. Our dried mealworms provide the essential protein to help them emerge healthy, vibrant, and ready to thrive.

Egg Production

More Eggs, Better Nutrition

Rich in protein, amino acids, calcium, and vital vitamins and minerals, our dried mealworms help boost both egg weight and egg production — even through winter. The high protein content helps hens maintain strong, consistent laying year-round.

Chick Development

A Head Start for Young Birds

Give your chicks a strong foundation with dried mealworms thoughtfully cultivated to support early growth and development. Include up to 4% of dried mealworms in their diet to provide the essential protein, amino acids, and energy needed for healthy, thriving chicks.

Compostable Packaging — No Plastics

The Bag

Bio-Based Compostable Pouches

Our resealable stand-up pouches (3oz, 10oz, and 1lb) are made from plant-based materials — wood cellulose, cassava, or eucalyptus leaves — sourced from Elevate Packaging. They are certified compostable to the ASTM D6400 standard and contain no BPA, PFAS, or phthalates. Compost them at home, on the farm, or drop them in your green waste curbside bin.

The Box

98% Recycled Cardboard Shipping

We ship inside cardboard boxes made from 98% recycled content, certified to either the Sustainable Forestry Initiative or Forestry Stewardship Council standards. Cardboard has an ~80% recycling and recapture rate in the US. Don't want to recycle it? Use the box as a weed barrier or garden mulch — it breaks down naturally.

Note on the 5lb bag: We introduced the 5lb size in Fall 2025 and are actively searching for a plastic-free alternative for this format. Bear with us while we work on it.

1% for the Planet

Every purchase contributes to reducing plastic waste. We pledge 1% of gross sales to certified non-profit organizations working to reduce plastic pollution — from finding alternative materials and improving recycling, to innovative methods for breaking plastics back down into organic matter. We support an "all of the above" approach to this global problem.

Consistent Supply, Year-Round. We maintain a large, stable colony in Eugene, Oregon — guaranteeing availability for families raising backyard chickens, birders, retailers, and wholesale partners every week. Contact us for volume pricing and wholesale inquiries.
You may return new, unopened items within 60 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).

    Tasty Wormies!

Posted by Abbey on Aug 13th 2026

In all transparency I really have nothing to compare these worms to, but they are a fan favorite at the Balcony Buffet. Mockingbird protects them with his life (but other friends manage to sneak some when he’s not looking). The worms are big, full (no hollows), and look healthy. I have purchased from Planet Bugs three times and will continue to do so as I’m really pleased with this quality domestic product.

    For the robins ?

Posted by CJ Jenkins on Jun 8th 2026

Our sweet nesting robins love these mealworms (I soak them in warm water for about a half hour before I set them on our patio). They eat them up each morning, about a tablespoon-worth! We love taking care of these cuties - I’d share a picture if I could! Thanks for the great, USA-grown wormies and the nice note from Brenden. I’ll be ordering more!

    Dried Mealworms

Posted by Denise Pare-Muirhead on May 13th 2026

I’m very happy with Planet Bugs’ dried mealworms from the USA! And not a foreign source. Additionally, there was a glitch in receiving my order due to the shipping label. And my Western Bluebird backyard visitors were getting impatient for their treats! I phoned the company and Michael started tracking my order. Very shortly the mealworms were delivered. All is well and many thanks.

    Repeat Customer

I have purchased the meals worms in the past. They are excellent and far superior to any other meal worms on the market. My chickens eagerly await getting them every day.

    Born in the USA

Posted by Pauline Tom on Oct 31st 2025

Hurray to PlanetBugs for offering dried mealworms that are not imported. I’ve read that some are fed growth hormones. I do not want to chance this as I’m feeding wild birds that visit my feeders. The only downside is that free shipping is not an option.

    Dried Mealworms

Posted by Dee on Jul 8th 2025

I'm new to the chicken world, but these were very nice. They were so perfect that I thought some of them were alive and moving when I had them in my hand to feed the chickens! My chickens were absolutely elated! There was no bad smell. Shipping was quick as well. I will continue to buy these.
